Participant20 years ago my band Captain i recorded a rocking album called Sooner Than Now. Our singer/drummer and very good friend, Ozzie, died in car crash in 2011. In 2012 I had the 2" analog tapes transferred to digital. I'm finally in a place where I know enough about mixing and have healed enough so now I can start mixing these myself. In May of 2020 I plan on re-releasing the album with my new mixes for the 20 year anniversary, it will be released digitally and on vinyl for the first time. A bonus disc (digitally released) of PLAP mixes is not out of the question either, and even a dance remix bonus bonus disc.
I thought it would be cool to share the multitracks with the PLAP community for anyone who wants to use these as practice, and feel free to use your mixes of these songs on your demo reels if you want. If anyone wants to turn the songs into dance remixes or something different, go for it, I'd love to hear it and I'm sure our fans would too. Seriously, get as creative as you want. Ozzie loved Prince, if anyone can nail down some Prince style Linn drums I'd be super happy.
The mixes were pretty good, but after 20 years sure there's some things we would change. Mainly, I would love for it to be a bit more aggressive than the original mixes. We felt the low end was lacking from the drums and bass. I would love to hear more of the drummers ghost notes. But, do what you do. I'm excited to hear it. Somewhere in the comments below I mentioned some Zep style drums, not sure they would work with our tunes, but I just want things to be bigger. - edit - As I'm digging through these mixes, I'm thinking more Hooligan's Holiday/Power To The Music (Motley Crue), I've referenced this album a few times for the drums and guitars.
FYI, I didn't edit the performance in any way on these files. On my mixes I've had to tighten up the bass guitar a bit. Mainly chopping out noise between notes, and nudging things to be in time with the drums, it's not that he's off, but he could have been a little tighter. I didn't edit the life out of it, but he was a guitar player/friend that we shoved into the position. lol, he did his best and I love him for it.
I'm including the original mixes as well as our 1998 DEMO EP.Recorded, mixed and mastered at OarFin Studios in Minneapolis in January 2000 on 2" tape. The transfer is 16bit 44.1k.
Enjoy, let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Thank you!EDIT: I have cleaned up the files a bit, now there is only the Sooner Than Now album and the original multitracks. I realized there were some other songs/takes that didn't belong. Each song is now in it's own separate zip file.

ParticipantHere’s a link to a folder with it separated into 4 zip files
I checked the ZIP, and it took a while, but it worked for me. So maybe 4.5gb is a lot? lol So, I'm uploading another folder with the same files, but I've split it across 4 zips in case anyone has trouble with the big zip.

ParticipantHi Nate
Here is a remix of Summer At your Place I did. Do you think it's in the direction you had in mind?
Note! The link will last for 7 days

ParticipantPeter! Cool mix!
Thanks for giving this a shot! Summer At Your Place is a song I would really like to hear someone do a dance remix on too if someone dares!
I could use more weight (40-60hz) in the kick drum for sure. The snare sounds snappy, but maybe a little thin? I'd love to hear some Bonham sounding drums, IDK if we can get there from what was recorded, but I just want big boombastic sounds. I want that kick to punch my chest! I know the recording is heavy on the 100hz area on the kick, they didn't capture much low end, so feel free to replace drum sounds if you need.
There is one thing, and this was just something I should have taken out myself, those weird 16th "percussion" keyboard sounds that is kind of doubling the high hat, we always hated that sound. lol. Our producer put that in! I guess I left it in just in case someone wanted to do something with it.
I'll live with this mix for a bit and let you know if I have other thoughts. Thank you so much for taking the time to mix this!

ParticipantI am totally open to edits and production or arrangement tweaks too. Anything to make this different or better. We love big delays and crazy Pink Floyd and shoegaze effects too, go crazy!
This is kind of the direction I am headed. I tightened up the bass guitar performance quite a bit. I doubled one of the guitars in the outro with a harmony (just used a pitch plugin). I really wanted to hear more of Ozzie's snare drum ghost notes, so I brought those up a bit and compressed the shnizzle out of the snare.
I still have work to do, but I'm getting there! Did I beat the original mix?

I did do some edits in the tracks for pocketing, and aslos some tuning of the vocals. I was not really happy with the kick sound, but I mixed the tracks that wren available. I was thinking of replacing/adding some kick and snare samples, but I wanted your opinions on what direction to go. I don't know if you think the overall sound is to live or not, but when you describe the drum sound you want I can imagine it to be very live.
I was thinking the percussive keyboard sound was a way to get a sprinkler sound, and I featured it this way, but I can understand that it's kind of annoying.
BTW: Do you know where the intro guitar part that can be heard panned hard right went? I can't find it in any of the files.
I will see if I can get it to the place were you want it.

ParticipantI think there is just the one guitar in the intro, panned left I thought. I was pretty sure you had it in your mix. I’ll give it another listen though.

ParticipantI just opened the tracks for Summer at your place. Wow, they did a pretty bad job transferring this. It's a mess. The 2 guitars were sent to a stereo file. Why? WTF. I'm kind of pissed, I wish I had dug into this deeper right after I had it done, I'm sure the tapes were erased by now. UGH.
So, to answer your question the Rhythm GTR is both guitars, there's only one gtr until the choruses.

ParticipantHi Nate
I did complement with kick and snare samples and changed the drum sound to a "modern" Bonham tone I think. I also removed the 16th note synth as you wished.
I hope you like it!

ParticipantPeter that kick sounds fantastic! Nice and thick!

ParticipantHere's my rough mix for Summer At Your Place. There's still some harsh "S" sounds on his vocal on the chorus, but I'm getting closer. I was able to map the tempo too, so I can also do like a club mix or something fun!

I noticed that my last mix was not checked in headphones and that it was way to extended in the low end. I cleaned up some of the rumble and did also a rough master for you to listen to. Perhaps some elements are not in the correct balance. I liked that in your version you got the synth centered during the guitar solo. Your guitar solo are also a lot more back in the mix, like to know what you think of this rough master.
BTW. Is it okay if I upload it to my Soundcloud account?
