I wasn't going to post about this quite yet....but I'm totally stoked about being part of building a small but very creative space in Toronto's west end....we have an incredible crew....my partner in the studio is a Juno (Canada's version of the Grammy) winner and an incredible musician as well as a very talented producer....who for the most part has been working ITB....we will be doing a DIY build with some great friends (and all musicians) who just happen to either licensed carpenters or house framers or wood workers or cabinet makers....

Our studio space is L shaped with 1000 sq. ft and 13.5 ft ceilings on the main floor (where studio will be)....

Upstairs is another 1000 sq. ft but only 8 ft ceilings....includes an odd shaped room reminiscent of an attic sort of where a EMT 140 reverb plate will likely find a home....plus an office space....lots of storage and even a possible songwriter suite

We have finalized a studio layout....but unfortunately I cannot share it here or on any other forum (asked not to)....so you will just have to accept my word that this studio will truly rock

We have an incredible collection of vintage gear including some old tape machines including Stueder J37; 70s Neve BCM 10; incredible old outboard gear such as Neve32264A  compressor, Neve 2254 compressor, Teletronix LA-2A optical limiter UREI version, a.k.a. "Silverface, UREI LA-3A levelling amplifier , Fairchild 670, Manley Variable MU limmiter compressor, 1956 Gates STA-LEVEL compressor – Telefunken V72S Tube Mic pre, Neve 1073 Mic preamp, Neve 1081 Mic Pre/EQ, Neve 1084 Mic Pre/EQ, Neve 1066 Mic Pre/EQ, Pultec EQP-1A, Lang PEQ-2....

      great mics including: 2 AKG C12 NOS; 2 AKG C12A; 2 AKG C414 EB; 2 AKG C414 B ULS; 2 AKG C24 Mk II; 5 Telefunken U47; 4 Neuman U67; 2 Telefunken U67; 2 Neumann 269; 6 Neumann U87; 2 Neumann U89; 2 Neumann KM 56; 2 Neumann M49; 2 Neumann M50; 6 Neumann KM 84; 2 Neumann KM 85; 2 Neumann KM88i; 2 Reslo; 2 RCA 44-A; 3 RCA 77-DX; 2 RCA BK5A; 4 Sony C-37A; 2 Telefunken ELA M 250

We will adding a BURL Mothership at the end....

We will be a full hybrid studio....

A typical work flow would be record on analog console (a 40 ch. Custom 75 with wings with that classic old Neve sound); initial mix as track then send to DAW (ITB)....then back through console to add a bit more analog colour...then through BURL....maybe bit excessive but gets results we like....using our analog gear as was intended for....

We have pretty amazing collection of instruments....vintage and modern....

We expect to have a creative inviting space with cool vibe....a small but efficient boutique commercial space....

Will post more when we start build....

OK we decided to scrap the three separate rooms....not doing a 'box in a box' as building is as quiet as a mouse (essentially a concrete bunker)....we are going back to a large tracking room idea....console in same room....other than separate drum room and iso/vocal booth....rose coloured glasses off....finished business plan....so trimming costs in big way....we have a friend working with us....did several big studios....mostly of that open concept....

Plan is to build production suite upstairs....maybe expand eventually to Dolby ATMOS (which we can)....send tracks after initial mix while recording....via Merging Technologies Horus via Ravenna....do full mix ITB....then print...

Going with less expensive but fully functional analog console....

We hope to be up and running by September....
