How do I mix the "mud" out without killing the feel ? I take out the lows and muddy mids and it's like listening to my songs on my grandparents AM radio.

I think the rather boring answer is small moves. Half a db here and a single db there. Then decide which instruments will give you the low mids and boost those a little to keep the balance.
Agreed! The master buss EQ is a good place to find those offending frequencies - but it's a bad place to fix them. Go work out what instruments are building up, a do small cuts to leave space for the instruments that need it!
