ParticipantGood luck Chris! It's always difficult to know what the judges are looking for in these mix competitions. I would imagine that Dave Pensado is looking for a mix that's distinct, technically proficient and has some element of surprise, a "wow factor".

ParticipantI worked a bit more on this mix.

KeymasterInteresting patois to the kick drum / bass riff in the verse. Like a heartbeat or stuttered steps. Really quite beautiful.
Kick is present, but very much belonging to the other drums and the mix. The vocals feel like they sit above the kick, with the guitars wrapped around them - very nice.
Chorus opens up nicely in terms of width and also emotion. Some lovely guitar tones springing up.
Lovely mix, technically tight and emotionally, subtly aware of the story of the song.

KeymasterHere's what I have so far...

Broad strokes are there, touches of automation, eq, little more compression still needed.
Went for an open sound, brighter up front, darker in the reverb. Played with the sense of distance a lot, so a much 'wetter' mix, than I'd usually go for. Sat the drums waaay back. Vocals are dripping wet in places.

ParticipantVery nice mix Toby! Superb guitar sounds, bass tone is really good and the mix has great width throughout. The drums are maybe lacking a bit of low end thump, especially since they're place far back in the mix. I like the lead vocal tone. It could perhaps benefit from a little bit more body and depth, but that really depends on what you're going for soundwise. Great work!

KeymasterThanks Anders! I 'retracked' everything through UAD's Neve 1073 and Studer A800, which worked a treat... buuut, it threw the levels out. Drums went lighter, when mixed together. ...which is weird, because they sounded warmer, fuller individually. Bit of rejigging should sort it out.
Now I just need to sell a kidney, so I can buy the Neve and Studer plugins (using demos at mo')...

Participant@Anders sounds great man. Killer kick drum. I really struggled getting that right for some reason. Choruses sound solid. I wonder if you could try and get a little more energy out of the vox on the verses. Sounds a little bland. It's the performance, not you, but a little grit or more compression could help. Just my $ .02

ParticipantHere's my submitted mix, it's always more challenging with these rules but I think I have it sounding OK. 🙂

ParticipantThis is my version. Cool song, changed the intro and the outro. Would have loved a different "straighter" beat on the second verse. Did play around with that idea for a while but put it aside, thinking it might be stretching the rules a bit too far.
