So here is my little Basement Studio in Minneapolis (actually, Eden Prairie, for those that know the area). I'm running Studio One with a FaderPort, Focusrite 2i2 Gen3, SansAmp Bass Driver DI, Rode NT1+, MusicMan bass, Epiphone Les Paul, crappy Strat copy, Ibanez acoustic, Casio WK-200 keyboard, Ampeg BA-115, and Akai MPD32. Oh, and LOT's of Waves plugin's,the STL ToneHub, and EzDrummer 2.
I started as a bass player, and moved into recording back in the '90's. I eventually was the house engineer at Powerhouse studios that had a Neve 8132 desk (Neve's worst, from what i understand) and Studer 24 track. When Napster hit in the late 90's, I had to cut my hair and get a real job.
I recently started up a "Dad band" and then got back into writing songs, which led to setting myself up with what I have now. I'm mixing on headphones, but really, really, want to get some studio monitors, probably Kali LP-6's or 8's. They are definitely next on the list. I'm also renovating a basement storage area to be my studio with some insulation and acoustic treatment. I'll share the journey on that on PLAP as we go along.
I am really loving PLAP and the community. I have learnt so much that I realize I didn't know back in the 90's because everything was so much experience based learning. While I could mic up a drum-kit with the best of them, I now realize I had no clue how to use compression properly. Also, we had 2 x 1176's, 2 x LA2's, and other outboard gear, but it was pretty easy to max out on them. Now with Studio One and plugin's, I can have Neve or SSL on every channel, as many 1176's, LA2's, and Pultec's as I want, along with some pretty good guitar sounds without breaking the bank. It is an awesome time to make music now!
