i cant type well or get ideas across
but i will try to explain what has helped me the most in this academy
      the mix challenges
      1.stock plugins..
      2.freeware plugin
3.No eq..only high pass allowed..will teach you how to use saturation and compression in new ways
      4. Recreate a passed recording as they would have done...this is very hard i recommend staring with 1979 up as 24 tape and more flexible console will make this easier (this is very hard you are going to have to count outboard the compressors and eq and commit to free them up once you have bounced down to what ever multitrack you've chosen

i really cant express how this changed my work or how it brought people together to work for the joy of it and to sorta push back the idea of our personal career (we all know that unicorn has been beaten to death)

        I'm in.

Maybe need a level playing field first...
A set of Academy tracks? All participants using the same tracks?
Another member throws up their tracks for us all to use? (That might be a great challenge too if people don't have Warren's recording ability.)

Personally, I would love to start with a stock plug-in challenge, or stock plus free. I confess I have no discipline in learning to use my own DAW to its full potential.
        : )

these were all the same mix the first one was a 7 plugin challenge you had to choose only 7 plugins and that was all toby chose https://soundcloud.com/toilettunes/wasting-away-magnificent-7-mix-chris-notes
then each month he would choose something else and we would work on it like we were in class together....most of these guys are working on real projects now and i got left behind..but the processes really teaches you that its your choices..you can do this with any tools...it helped me to use my ears..why am i doing this.....i struggle so hard with plugins and gear thinking that if only i had this i would be better blah blah....plus this brought me closer to some of these guys....i started to see they had styles and i could start to hear this is a toby mix chris sweet patrick stu...i could hear that they were experimenting and not just trying to beat warren mixes or one another...for me this took the academy to a new place and i miss it

              Hi Kip and Arthur!

I just had a wonderful awful idea.
After the livestream I was thinking about Mark's question about using Studio One's stock compressor for transient shaping.

Have you seen the Phil Allen course "Mixing with EQ and Compression"? There's a multitrack drums, piano, bass, acoustic guitar, very short. Ten bars, maybe. I call it The Newb Loop.
I dragged the tracks into a new session just now to see what I could do with them, to see how much I know now vs. a year ago, to see if I could make it sound really great. Using mostly the stock compressor and eq.
Oh boy. Yes, it's easier and better, but it's also easier to see my shortcomings, too.

              What about that track?

                Hello

I like these ideas Kip I think I may well get to this, just to do myself.

Lisa I'm sure I posted this another forum but here's the presonus technique

                http://blog.presonus.com/index.php/2018/10/26/friday-tips-studio-ones-transient-shaper-kick-snare

Also Lisa I'm sure plenty of people have told you but Warren said can some tell Lisa to watch this bit after you left (that Man looks after you) from about 2hrs on in the Ditty mix breakdown. Warrens works some more on Vocals.

not sure what you mean about the track but the guy that taught me use to make me use this alesis 3630 compressor to control attack on a kick drum...the idea was to learn attack release time and that was before transient designers ( at least as far as my very small world knew about)...it did hep me though
but that exercise you are talking about is incredibly important to learning and something i need to get a better handle on

what we need is a leader to get behind i will write to toby but he is really busy

                    Hello kip

I think Warren is our Leader 🙂

But if you want to do this then I would suggest setting up a thread in the MIX forum maybe call it mixing with restrictions? Then suggest one of the songs from the back catalogue and state how many plugins are allowed to be used or only what type we can use. eg Compressors and EQ only and not more than 4 comperssors at once etc.

That already as me thinking of how to work around that 😉 Compress, print, repeat maybe?

Is this what you were thinking of?

There was plenty mix challenges thread's you can see how it went down....i am not the one to start anything. I cant even spell or right properly.....i ment people who give usable feedback have and give encouragement very much like warren does but on a peer like classmate.....i talked to toby ...he siad after hes is done with project its possible he may have time...so i do hope some version of what they were doing happen but i cant make it happen im the last person people want to even click on the thread

                        Hello

I'm sure that's not true Kip 🙂 It seems everyone here is here to help to me.

I'm having some issue's with Studio one crashing at the moment (tech dept is helping to find the cause so it should get sorted soon) which means mixing is a little tricky at the moment as you can imagine.

I'll be sure to have a browse though the older threads

                          Hi Mark and Kip...
I'm putting up a version of the Newb Loop on Soundcloud. https://soundcloud.com/just-lisa-3/pro-mix-academy-newb-loop/s-MgwQf
Can you just picture going insane while trying to make it perfect?
It felt really good to do it again to see how much I've developed.

Not that we need to use this one.
                          : )

Mark: thank you for the head's up. I did go back and watch the rest of the mix breakdown! I'm certain that being one of four women makes me stick out a bit. ; ) (Anita, Sheila, and Emily. If there are any more, I don't think I've 'met' them yet.)

                            Hello

Yes simple but plenty in there to practice techniques for getting to grips with the tools Lisa 🙂

Now I seem to have S1 running again time to get back to this practice!

                            Mark
