With the resurgence of vinyl, the demand for mixes and mastering for vinyl medium is again on the rise. Rolling Stone reported that “Vinyl records earned $224.1 million (on 8.6 million units) in the first half of 2019” and are poised to overtake CD sales for the first time in 33 years. I would like to suggest an academy lesson topic on the details of how to master for vinyl. Considerations such as dynamic constraints, physics of decreasing rate of needle travel speed and effects on frequencies, details of important specifications and common techniques, and tips tricks for troubleshooting common and maybe not so common issues would be suggested content matter. Additionally, overviews of specialized equipment used in vinyl production would be important for the member to gain a greater understanding of vinyl production context. In the end, the academy member would have a set of fundamentals to get started with and begin practicing for the medium, along with an understanding of equipment and services needed in order to deliver a vinyl master.
