what are the rules for eq?
and if we use warrens printed effects h3000 and verbs /echoplex is that cheating?....

I'd say each eq plugin counts toward your 7. And printed effects are fair game

Yep... EQ are same as other plugins.

Also I think, if we stick to just mixing. i.e. no virtual instruments (come with their own FX), no reamping or tracking extra instruments.

So... standard mix contest rules. Drum samples are cool. And standard DAW editing tools etc.

What do we reckon?

What about drum samples from Trigger? Technically it's a plugin! I guess I could import a drum sample/s but then, that rule could get stretched to other things in the mix 😉 Should we just keep it simple, and only use what is provided?

Lessons learned...

1) You don't need a lot of plugins
2) De-essing by hand is a pain in the ass but effective
3) UAD Ampex is cheating and I'll never stop using it

knowing what tools you have to work with...

i am having the worst time with the cubase eq(i like my fake knobs to turn /slate stuff) wish i had a good channel strip but your absolutely right im starting to come to the same conclusion

Do you have the slate mix rack? Why not reach for one of
Those eqs? Also if you're looking for a few awesome free plugins, check out Tokyo dawn labs. They have a 3 band eq, dynamic eq, and mastering compressor
