ParticipantThis is an all-time favorite - I really enjoyed contributing to Jesper’s version for January’s Birthday-bration. When Warren & the boys recorded it, I couldn’t pass up the chance to add my existing tracks to theirs, hence this mix.
Tracks that are me [& lifted directly from the original]:
Lead vocal
Backing vocals
Piano
Bass
Mellotron strings
The 4-bar outro lead guitar breakPLAPA tracks used [with a bit of editing to get a little closer to the original]:
Drums
Percussion
Saxes
Guitars [all but the outro lead break mentioned above]Since my tracks were done to a click & Warren’s weren’t, I had to hand-copy the ever-changing tempo value of each bar of Warren’s tracks from Pro Tools into Logic then edit my tracks to sync it all up. Painstaking but totally worth it!
As always, all feedback is welcomed & appreciated.
NOTE: big thanks to Konrad Kobic & Sean Sullivan. Implementing their feedback, I took the snare down 1.5dB & the lead vocal down .5dB for Version 2. Also, I adjusted the brick wall on the bass's high pass filter from 72 to 84Hz. HUGE difference!
2nd NOTE: Took the snare down another dB & the bass down .3dB along with it for Version 3. Between yesterday's & today's rebalancing, I was able to hear the rest of the mix better & tweak accordingly.
For me, the lesson is to adjust downward twice what I think I need, see how I feel about that & work my way back up if necessary. There were several times during these remixes where twice what I thought I needed turned out to be just right!

ParticipantHi Pete,
Interesting Mix, just feel the snare overpowers the rest of the drum kit. the bass guitar could possibly need some brightness bringing back in. Backing vocals could come up in volume as the lead vocal sits a bit forward of the mix. the fade out at the end seems rushed - not sure if the original did it that rushed - but it might be because so used to hearing fadeouts lasting for 20 seconds.
its good to know that you can fix timing issues to make things work with a click track if you want to add bits.
but I love this song, I think i'm gonna have to try and do a mix of it myself.
Keep it going
Konrad

ParticipantThanks so much for listening, Konrad. I’ve been back & forth on pretty much every aspect you cited & have a tendency to fall in love with a part; here I believe I’ve done so with the snare, bass & lead vocal. Will give things a fresh listen & try to give the other tracks a fair second chance. ?
And yes the fade on the original ramps down quickly, as if the band had a cab to catch!

ParticipantHey Pete - Great mix, and great job putting it all together! I agree with Konrad, the snare could definitely come down, it got to be a bit much as the song went on. To me it also sounded like there was a little too much of the bass under 60hz, I'd try high passing that a bit more. This was always one of my favorite songs "back in the day" so it was fun to hear your take on it.

ParticipantThanks very much for the feedback, Sean - implementing it made for a way better v2 mix.
I'm off to listen to your mix of FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH - looking forward to it!

ParticipantPete! <3
Love the "pressure" you gave it!
Gets sort of staccatic and very distinct 🙂
As someone above mentioned, the snare takes over a tad.
Balance feels just right.
Well done my friend!May 21, 2021 at 9:34 am #90035Pete Sawchuk
