I think this would be my dream front end. It's neve based, 10 1073-esque channels, 4 band eq, lots of fat transformers.

Just gotta find 21 grand lying around...

Yep, that definitely looks awesome. Aurora has a great reputation too. 21K is a lot but it seems pretty reasonable for what you get. They also have a option for inserts on each channel that costs extra. It would sure look nice in a studio and it would feel like you are tracking on a console.

Something I have personally thought more about is API's "The BOX" which looks to have a similar footprint despite being a completely different animal. The more mix centric features of the Box appeal to me more (also it's $6500 cheaper) since I don't, nor do I plan to do a lot of drum tracking.

I still probably won't get that one though either because I think I'd prefer to get more individual pieces and 500 stuff. I find that more / smaller stuff is always far easier to sell for a decent value if ever needs or tastes change. Maybe it's just me but I am always thinking of things as assets. Of course the look of a fancy sidecar or console is a client draw too so one can't neglect that.

I've looked at API as well but it doesn't come with many preamps as I recall. Definitely more oriented toward summing/mixing. The Aurora could do front end and mixing/summing duties if need be. They also sell an 8 channel rack of pres and EQs as well for about 13k if I wanted it strictly for front end duties. Being able to cut drums is the goal but again, this is all dependent on me moving beyond a home studio situation.

Right now I have mostly API type preamps so getting a neve flavored front end would be awesome.

Yeah the Box only comes with 4 Pres.
