I recently had an engineer tell me that one should at least have the free version (or the cheapest version) that is able to open a Pro Tools session so that if you get a Pro Tools file you are good. But I would think that normally you'd get the stems from an engineer if just recording at a studio (and mixing at home, for instance).

I don't know.

But I will say this, PreSonus is really targeting Pro Tools users. You can set up S1 with PT shortcuts and there is, IIRC, a video series on transitioning from PT to S1.
