    Some software licensing systems use the ethernet card MAC address (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address) as a unique serial number like identifier for the computer to license products against. Perhaps the code that retrieved the MAC address was hardware specific to Apple products and didn't work with the ethernet card you used on your Hackintosh?
