Another good little technique is to select the offending S's on your track and apply a crossfade - It's a good alternative to automation sometimes. EQing into compression can help your de-essing alot, EQing your vocal while pushing into a 1176 style compressor works well at taming those S's.. less work for your de-esser to do later.
