I am with Andrew (Amacca). I don't pre process tracks unless they need comp'ing with the exception of vocals which I might edit and pitch correct if necessary. I gain stage after importing tracks into my template to -18 for instruments and -14 for vocals. Then it's phase and alignment. I follow the principle of "only do what is necessary". When recording I am still recording via an analogue desk so tracks get analogue EQ applied at that stage to shape the sound and frequency range for where I want it to sit in the mix. Vocals might also get outboard compression and tube pre amp in the chain depending on the mic chosen and the style of the singer/song.
